And yeah, nobody was perfect 300 years ago, but given that Jefferson was writing about the profitability of forcing his slaves to give birth every 2 years I feel comfortable grading on a curve that honestly doesn't need to be terribly generous

He succeeded in keeping us out of a war between France and England which would have likely destroyed the country and which basically everyone else in the US was itching to fight, he really doesn't get enough credit for that.
