it isnt aerosolised, so the virus doesnt ‘hang’ in the air. It can in certain situations (like when intubated -> ventilator) - but otherwise it falls to the ground quickly.

there's a tricky distinction some people are making between airborne and aerosol transmission, there was a good thread about this which i've probably lost

Right. There are many aerosol droplet sizes and small droplets can get smaller before they land. They can even completely evaporate leaving the virus airborne. Though that should be generally uncommon. So, at the very least even a rudimentary mask can act as a sneeze shield.
