Can't speak to how tolerable it is for a human being to wear & breathe through a salt-coated mask, but the idea of utilizing a hydrophilic layer makes sense to me as a relative layman

Have used one coated by me, no problem. The major problem is that you need to make it perfectly sealed at the sides. And for humanity it is stupid that this path wasnt studied for this moment. Including normal fabrics and have a table of effectiveness.

I guess the more pressing question for me rn is why this pandemic and subsequent PPE shortage caught the US flatfooted in the first place.

Make a Saturated salt solution using hot water
Soak your mask in the solution, making sure all surfaces including internal fabric is drenched
