A more honest and effective message would be, “We don’t have enough masks, so please don’t buy masks—we need them for health care workers.” But even then, the logistics don’t work out. It isn’t as though my hospital is buying that box of masks on Amazon if you don’t.

This is a misconception If you spend all day within 6 feet of infected people masks are very effective. But you also need to combine them with biohazard suits and face shields. Use of a mask without the other protective measures in casual contact like shopping is not the same.

User error in literally all of this — the gearing up, the hand-washing, the 6-foot gap, all of it. Masks were always going to be much more effective if everyone wore them, placing two barriers between infected and uninfected. Instead, noone does. *That* is stupid.
