Interesting. I agree with your initial comment; however, regarding the source code (great analogy) I view it essential for people to understand that it is rewritable. Whether or not they're interested in rewriting it (to their benefit) is their choice

People consent on one level or another, but it's **usually** bc they've come to believe they're somehow "bad" wrt negative emotions, this is often because they've become ashamed of their volatility; but they're volatile, at least in part, bc they're not happy with the status quo

Self-development of all sorts lends itself very easily to slipping into cult dynamics. Cult-like influence is something that should be common knowledge among personal development coaches, but mysteriously isn't. Which is weird, because the whole point is empowerment.
