I (hopefully rightly) trust our system to generally get very good at triage very fast. But you have to remember that we only have so many ambulances, ERs, etc.

People need to think way, way harder about the implications of a healthcare system under strain to the point of chaos. People will behave very differently if they have reason to believe that getting into a car accident could lead to them bleeding out in a hallway.

Maybe. That implies a high degree of knowledge, honesty and self-awareness. I'm not sure most Americans have those in sufficient quantities.

Tangentially to your (true) point, accidents are interesting analogy/disanalogy to COVID-19. Given comparable # of deaths/permanent injuries from accidents, why not same push to shut traffic? The virality/false +ves somehow makes it different in kind despite similar loss of life.
