I think we're seeing that an infectious outbreak will rapidly spiral at the point the hospitals hit capacity and you can't spin out enough beds to avoid sending sick people back into the community. Likely part of what's happening here, a function of demographics + infrastructure
Agree, it's just the least eye-cross-inducing way to get a sense of scale over time at a glance (for me). Bc deaths & recoveries are pretty small quantities this probably doesn't distort an intuitive read *too* badly

How do you make these charts? Not only are they beautiful, but this is the best visualization I’ve seen related to covid response.
It might seem minor, but the typography is perfect, the colors are perfect, the axes are clearly labeled, and there’s even a grid. I want whatever script or program you used to generate these! It’s probably the default settings of something, but I don’t know what.
