Jesus Christ. I'm suggesting that it's not that terrible to leave early on an excuse and then decline a second date via phone or text. It's not something everyone wants to hear in public, when they feel they have to manage their reaction. Wtf are you talking about?

How else could you make an excuse that you need to help a friend in the middle of the date unless it's an emergency? Would be totally rude if it wasn't.

It's a first date. You're not friends or confidantes. You can just say "sorry, something important has come up and I have to go."

All I originally meant was “hey, sorry, so-and-so has a flat tire and needs a lift. It was good to meet you, have a good evening.” I think most people, given the stated condition of a no-chemistry evening, can figure out that matters will not progress from there.

I think there's a whole bunch of chat of pros and cons of this below/in various threads. I'm still of the opinion that it's better to be tactfully honest, but don't really have anything else to add than what's already said.
