Sometimes I get the impression that just about everybody is pretty disastrously wrong about something, so much so that a layperson like me can't even determine which direction is up. I feel that way about drug abuse epidemics.

I don’t know, but I get the impression that a lot of Americans are desperately miserable and I have a hunch that that is more relevant than the specific molecules they use to escape real life.

You are correct for the most part. The source of our misery is, in fact, other americans.

It's possible to be functional while addicted to opioids, as long as you're not chasing the high while you're at work, and you're not spending all of your time trying to get your drugs because they're so damn expensive. There's probably a detrimental effect on motivation.

If opioids were legal, there would probably be several more times people using them, but they would be able to lead better lives than today's addicts, and they wouldn't resort to crime nearly as much because the drugs would be far cheaper.

Don't worry, 'bout a thing, 'cause every little thing, will be alright. Don't worry. Love and let live. People make bad decisions on a much lower frequency than the people who make good decisions. We learn, or we don't. But overall we do. :)
