I read that piece so differently: 0 mockery. https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/2/13/21128209/coronavirus-fears-contagion-how-infection-spreads … cc
@Recode@shiringhaffary I read "...some of the most powerful institutions and figures in the tech industry are taking measures to protect themselves from the deadly virus..." despite other view at the end.2 replies 0 retweets 8 likes -
Tech industry loves to cry "the media's bullying me!" Ironic considering what tech's done to the media industry

Indeed. I think, in general, it's hard to bully the most powerful industry in the world. It's up to us, in tech, to avoid being the bullies and use our power responsibly.

Do you think I'm powerful in the way you're speaking of here, Roy? Or not in tech? Or something else? I think we both understand that the situation here is extraordinarily complex. And I don't think you're being entirely honest about it. Disappointed.

I think Roy is probably coming from a good place, but postrations from "tech" aren't his to give. It's not just standing institutions taking shots at each other; many of us still struggling to come up don't want to have to cash the dumb culture/norm checks that are being written.

This case is especially bad because people are dying. But I'm tired of feeling like I'm seen as a woman first and a thinker second. I'm tired of people enabling bad behavior & zero-sum thinking because they feel guilty. At some point, we have to start being honest.

I'd *like* to have a real conversation about the role of tech journalism, e.g. where it ought to amplify vs. serve as a check. But right now we're stuck in a death spiral in which writers mint themselves on killing a company or career, and their subjects are starting to fire back

95% of this ends up being self-righteous social media LARPing anyway, but occasionally some stupid throwaway piece ends up bombing a naive writer's career or a hounded founder kills themselves. There's just no good reason for it.
