Because it almost implies *to me* that everyone was fine with scoring woke points when the people who were dying looked nothing like them and lived in a faraway place

Doesn't it make sense to take precautions against a disease only once it crosses a threshold of credible danger? The start of the outbreak looked like the Ebola panic to me (and I'm sure to many others). Your perspective here seems uncharitable.
