Though you mean this as a joke, an asteroid uses the only proven strategy for decreasing wealth inequality to near zero — to make everyone equally poor.
If a global supply chain disaster made the poorest half 10% poorer & the wealthiest half 50% poorer, the greatest tragedies would still befall the poor. In the context Harold proposes, measuring wealth distribution is a great example of "play stupid games, win stupid prizes."

Quick Ideological TT: part of the reason many people believe inequality is bad is because it transfers power to wealthier people in a zero-sum way, which they use badly If true, it could make it (sometimes) better to decrease inequality even if everyone becomes poorer near-term
