These folks have no idea how many constraints + how little slack exists for most poor people. There has always been a large group that cannot make a PT or FT schedule work reliably & which have relied on lucking into odd jobs for any chance at bootstrapping upward.
"Gig economy" work created some semblance of stability for those people. I have a hard time believing that they're the ones taking a gamble on keeping their work after CA is done tinkering, because their alternative is literally flyers on lampposts and CL ads for random tasks.
If you want to help those people, great, but you do actually need to make some effort to understand their reality on the ground *first.*
btw, whatever you think of Uber's labor structure, it's important to notice that it created a MASSIVE demand + market for low-skill work that simply did not exist before. The Uber infrastructure unlocked literally billions of dollars worth in arrangements between riders & drivers
I have my beefs with Uber/Lyft due to the chances in fares over the last couple of years. But at least they are upfront about it. Working for a ride share company changed my life overnight. Instant pay alone is innovation. It’s insulting to be told how to be told to work.
