I've noticed that many of the most persistent childhood traumas related to being made to feel unwanted, a burden, the "bad" one. I think they may persist as "chronic mental illness" because being sick doesn't heal the wound of being a burden — being *the healer* does

I think this is why emotional support pets can be effective — they provide a mechanism to “be needed” and to be able to care for and be useful to another creature (Please note: miniature horses should be included in this)

I can totally vouch for this. In my neighborhood there are a lot of older people. Asking them to tell you a story or teach you something is 100x more helpful than asking them if you can help them. In the words of an older lady "thank you for helping me feel useful again"
