For longer than I’ve been alive, conservatives like Buckley, Friedman, Will, Sowell, pointed out over and over that modern liberals in the US weren’t liberal at all. Our founders believed in individual freedom, liberals do not. They just finally realized the charade was over.

This doesn't have to be just about cynical hypocrisy. It can also be a selection effect. When an idea goes from fringe to mainstream their new adherents won't have any practice in rejecting orthodoxy. They'll be normie conformists who arrived at the "correct" positions by chance

I think this is it. There’s a core of principled liberals (in the European sense) but perhaps no more than 5% of the population. Because they’re principled, you can persuade them to support you if you can appeal to those principles, but you only need to do that if you’re losing.
