It's almost as though some people become very wealthy building these software app thingies because getting it right isn't trivial and because the value of getting it right is very high

well, getting it right isn't actually the hard part, and most tech products only "get it right" to a pretty low standard these days. the wealth comes from somewhere else, like the value and new-ness of the ideas.
