You've probably already seen both of these, but in case you haven't, I think you'd like them.

Good article! Learning is best done through play. How much control should a teacher have over the parameters of a playful environment? With no control at all, the fear is that children will gravitate towards video games and other products advertised to them.

this is good, I liked the point about how children can't be made to play with an imposed objective

the school assignments I always despised the most were the faux creativity ones that attempt to force you to discover something by experimenting. when you know already it's just doubly insulting

This is a great start. While I generally think you have a lot of interesting ideas, as a parent of two young children I think you have a blind spot regarding certain practical realities of parenting. I’d like to see a deeper investigation into the “efficient childcare” issue.

Have you read the recent SSC on Chinese schooling? Raises points about play vs discipline that relate to your conclusions. https://slatestarcodex.com/2020/01/22/book-review-review-little-soldiers/ …

Man I feel so fucked by the school system. When I wanted to learn something on my own I tried to emulate the model, and it became a grind I was resisting. I’m 32 and only now learning how to listen to myself.

As a student myself, I can relate with this. The Math/Calculus i've learned in school was just mindless plugging of formulas & the goal was to get the ability to solve the equations faster instead of giving a broader intuition behind the real concepts.

But, all thanks to internet & online education. We're now able to learn things the way we want, get a lot of different ways of explanations on a single topic & can ask questions & get satisfactory answers from experts all around the world!
