*Having* a negative externality, not *being* a negative externality. The point is that one component of the motivation to see popular things comes specifically from their popularity-qua-popularity, and not their quality-as-evidenced-by-their-popularity.

In the case of Facebook, I've definitely heard the idea that me steadfastly refusing to get a Facebook account contributed to my loneliness in middle/high school. Not sure how true that is in practice (maybe I was better off because FB is a trap), but the causal pathway exists.
