Not long ago, "murderers and child rapists should have to live with what they've done" was considered a perfectly reasonable defense of an abolitionist position on the death penalty. It's interesting to notice the new pushback against "maximum punishment" for even the worst crime https://twitter.com/Vanessa_ABee/status/1218019316454563840 …

I don't have a firm personal position on the death penalty, but I suspect that the recent cultural shift has been toward perceiving *all* crime as a demonstration of "lack of privilege" or systemic injustice, and that's just clearly not always the case

Honestly... I don't know if there are great social benefits to societal rage, but I honestly can't muster a lot of concern about the folks who want to see killers who kill for sexual gratification or money punished in the worst way

we have the death penalty in SG I'm... not a fan I have friends who are strongly against it and I respect that I don't like how secretive the State is about it but the worst thing to me is how medievally *gleeful* some people are about using it:https://twitter.com/visakanv/status/1015858758453420032 …

visa is cleaning out his notes @visakanvWhat I have an issue with is the glib, flippant, sanctimonious attitude many Singaporeans have towards the death penalty. There is a moral posturing that happens that’s outright medieval. If someone gets arrested for drugs, we get “hang him!!!” in the comments. What the fuckShow this thread1 reply 0 retweets 5 likes -

A small counter: I think glee at vengeance/revenge fantasies are often a direct result of perceived helplessness. People tend to feel this way when they see an animal, child or vulnerable person purposefully rendered completely unable to protect themselves and then harmed

yea, so I'm not particularly mad at the people with the vengeance fantasies so much as the system that has left people like this

I don't disagree, I just want to point out that vengeance in this context may be a societal immune system response: if you target the weak and helpless to avoid any fighting back, the strong will come after you
