Is it possible that we have some bias of rationality over harmony? I could see how it would be hurtful to feel that your efforts are unappreciated and to feel some obligation to do certain "caring" things (e.g. make tea).

The appropriate thing to do, if you're feeling unappreciated, is to scale back your "caring" to a more sustainable level. In reality, when people who nurture resentment do this they tend to feel *more* upset when their efforts aren't missed. (This tells you something.)

Rationally I may not see the immediate benefit as an engineer but I could see the benefit if I were say a councelor: my clients would feel cared for and like me and thus be more willing to recommend me.
