I've never been a fan of guns, definitely one of those "just let the police do their job" folks. But it's gradually getting to the point where the risks of having a firearm don't necessarily outweigh the local risks, and if I hit the tipping point I want to already be proficient
I've never been the type to defer safety to police. The only person responsible for your safety is YOU and the people who care about you. I'm glad you've decided to take the first step in being able to defend yourself. Don't be afraid of it. It will be ok.
