In many cases, the right to do business freely has been a — possibly *the* — cornerstone for true social justice for marginalized people.

It should go without saying, but it is very hard to subjugate a person who knows well that they can take their business elsewhere.

Imagine having to work hard to move up in the world. Pathetic!
-
Right! Now imagine working hard and getting nowhere. Both things happen. The necessary isn't always sufficient, and a desire to address structural shortcomings doesn't necessarily imply a lack of appreciation about what's good with the status quo. Beware the strawman argument.

do you think that already having (perhaps family) wealth is considered more or less vulgar than this idea
-
Similar ideas belonging to the same family, where the most important thing is whether or not you "deserve" spending power regardless of whether or not it was freely given or transacted.

Is this based on a religious belief that people belong in the place and class that God placed them in?

It makes sense, if we realize that the core function animating a society needs to optimize for the stability and sustainability of that society. In a sustainable society, instead of moving up, we should fulfill our required role as well as we can. (That may involve working hard.)

It saddens me that all these things, plus the vulgar idea of ordinary people (the original meaning of "vulgar") having the right to bear arms, are under attack here & now. Those who sneer at the idea of American exceptionalism rarely realize how low the historical bar really is.

So many people seem to be hell-bent on destroying a genuinely-great-by-historical-standards nation for its failure to be perfect, for a given early 21st century value of perfection.
