Our current frame is about "smart" and "stupid" people, and through that lens it makes sense to make coursework easier to fluff your grad/"student success" numbers. But it won't work. Small vocabulary tweaks can be helpful, I find. When I teach math, and someone says “I can’t do [x],” I make them repeat the sentence with the word “yet” at the end. Instant optimism! And it actually works to begin changing mental framework in some students.
