The "smart"/"stupid" frame persists *because* schools are bad at teaching. We implicitly believe people *are* whatever they are, not that exploration-discovery-mastery circuits can transform people (all people, not just "prodigies" or "geniuses").https://twitter.com/teacheshumans/status/1212378720796921856?s=20 …

Agree. If we view HS as a tool to ensure as many post-HS doors as possible are open, Algebra - Cal makes sense. Unfortunately, many seem think students should be selecting their careers by the 10th grade and anything that doesn’t align w their choice is a waste.

I suspect there’s some tangential connection here to the increasing push for HS athletes to specialize in one sport early, rather than playing multiple. It’s odd, our culture’s simultaneous perpetual infantilization + “choose your adult persona immediately!”

In lieu of many possible comments, I will leave this documentary as a present. https://youtu.be/hv2TWkmTIlE In my late 20s I visited this K-8 and felt home for once in a school. Not perfect, but excellent. Happy new year to you.

One caveat to learning is the individual's drive to do so. A critical part of teaching is to try to ignite the needed interest/curiosity. But many just go thru the motions and crush it instead.

But isn't the larger issue that Algebra is as irrelevant to most people's lives as Greek? What's the point of force-feeding math that very few will every use or remember?
-
PG's point was that altering coursework to "improve" outcomes is just playing accounting games. My point was that it's hard to dumb down a curriculum enough to hide that you can't actually teach. Your point is also a good point, and one I've made before. There's room for them all

do you think it would be possible for every student to learn algebra if they had a good personal tutor?
