I think this is part and parcel of the crisis of meaning. What’s a chaplains’ office to do if it doesn’t believe they have anything of value or relevance to offer students? What are students to do if their primary relationships with adult life are requesting milk-and-cookies?

(It is underappreciated how much of YC’s success is having close to a monopoly on telling the target audience “We think you are capable of doing something that actually matters.”)

No wonder why parents are still helicoptering grades in college...these students are obviously not seen as adults...we did not have this BS in college. Pls.

So true... This was an illuminating book on the topic. Recommended.https://www.thecoddling.com/

I am less sick than you! I enjoy bouncy castles but not colouring. There isn't a reason only children should get to do these things; it could still feel infantilising due to connotations.

I think this + replies are a bit too much philosophizing. Having lived above this chaplain's office as a very non-religious student, I saw it as simply a nice way to connect stressed students. Yale supplied study breaks (Popeyes, cookies, pizza, therapy dogs) were common + great

Working on fixing this. Depression, PTSD, and anxiety that is. Easier to see the effects there since it feels more immediate than a reduction in chronic disease risk.https://mobile.twitter.com/FountainPortal/status/1211401580026585088 …

I think at Ivy League-type schools in particular there is a problem with young people who were never really allowed fully to be children because of the college-prep grind, so a certain amount of recreational neoteny is maybe to be expected.

As an elite institution of higher learning, Yale College trains the future leaders of America. Now our best and brightest will have such skills as marking coloring books, eating cookies, and jumping around in bouncy castles. Skills any ordinary 6 yr old has already mastered.
