I do not understand the seemingly bottomless advertising budget for Shen Yun. I feel like this a front for a cult, or maybe some sort of alien bodysnatching operation

Yep, and has been for decades. But for what it's worth, Shen Yun followed me from San Francisco — and onto my plane's tiny screen ads — and into London. Which is why it feels especially alien-invasion-y
