Whether people "should" work nights and weekends in order to be successful is drawing out the problem entirely the wrong way. If you don't enjoy the work and don't care about the outcome, that job is not going to make you successful whether or not it makes you rich.

Thumbs get put on the scales of markets all the time. If we had a truly a free market heroin and high explosives would have reduced our civilization to rubble by now. But as long as there's only an acceptable level of violence, we let market forces control.

The market is not that violent; individuals who really want pharmaceutal-grade opiods can get them, and everyone is driving around with a tank full of highly flammable liquid. I assume you explain this away with "people are stupid," but on that we'd also disagree.
