Whether people "should" work nights and weekends in order to be successful is drawing out the problem entirely the wrong way. If you don't enjoy the work and don't care about the outcome, that job is not going to make you successful whether or not it makes you rich.

And I don't really mean that in some hippie way, either. Withering in a job that's wrong for you reduces your optionality over time while making you increasingly vulnerable to a caring upcomer. Traditionally, you prevent homeostasis via office politics. Not my pic of "success"

Alternatively, people may say this sort of thing when they really don't work very hard to make their money because, for example, they're in a good position to coast. IMO they're basically trying to get you to internalize the idea that *they* are successful Because Money

I prefer the traditional concept of success, whereby you genuinely try to accomplish something, and then you do.

Having a 'genuine ' or 'sincere' longing for something is rare. 99.99% of the time people want to accomplish something because they want to enjoy the fame, money etc that comes with it.

Reading this one shouldn't even try to be sincere, the very act of trying is insincere.

'Accomplish' isn't quite it. Failure to accomplish can be deeply worthwhile too! Unless we expand the concept of accomplishment like this:https://www.azquotes.com/quote/783049

As you've (roughly) said before, you *have* to expand it in this way if you want to say that any scientist has *ever* been successful — since none of them have ever actually been "right," in the way that people usually mean it. :)

Most worrying is that some feel the need to tell others during one of the holiday season or weekend nights that they need to work weekends or nights or holidays to be successful or something. The act alone suggests they should take some time off.

And the medium, along with the timing, is part of the message. I can’t imagine sitting down with someone, and this person using a for many special occasion to connect with friends and family to recommend working all the time in order to be “successful”. Bananas.
