The real heroes in science are the prominent people who shepherd good theories they didn't create, and help kill any bad ones they did.

Strong shepherds are necessary because a paradigm-shifting idea is also an idea that will maim or kill established careers, and the people who come up with these ideas are often too naive about that stuff to have their self-preservation instincts kick in and stop them
