For a while, the city's high cost of living and various hostilities were just tricky soil. If you could grow here, you'd made it through a filter. But that only worked as long as the talent found the conditions livable, and the city wasn't doing broad preemptive strikes on tech.

I toughed it out in NYC for probably 5-10 years longer than I should have, and it was shocking to me how rapidly my quality of life turned around when I left. I suspect once the animating myths around SF hit a tipping point the change will come more rapidly than anyone expects.
