The only way to make sense of defending Gawker is "I have friends who work there/want to get hired by someone who's connected there."
IMO, for most it came down to "conservative billionaire vs. journalists," which is of course the frame journalists ensured would stick. It's not hard to see how that spread amongst knee-jerk partisans, but the people who were paying even a *little* more attention have no excuse.
