The painter might spend 10 hours painting, and his assistant may spend 10 hours stretching the canvas, ordering the pigments, arranging viewings, negotiating with auction houses, etc. Would it be fair for the latter to receive "a sliver of the value"?
The painter does very little at all, aside from think of some picture and then move his hands to make it. He likely doesn't even know how to make a canvas or mix paints. If it weren't for massive cultural infrastructure, he'd have nothing. Why does he deserve more than you or me?
