I was taught to read fluently before school. We were forced to read altogether as a class and I had to slow down to quacking peers, which was soul crushing experience.

It took me forever to read a clock with dials as a kid. That was embarrassing enough. I was also timid about reading and my pace in school. I'd have to re-read and re-read lines because it would start to jumble together in my vision

If your kid wants to. My older son essentially taught himself to read just before his 4th birthday, with enthusiastic support from his parents. My older son is six and a half and wants to draw and build and gives few shits about words. I’m not going to force-feed reading to him.

Who is like “don’t learn that now kiddo, that’s school’s job” with their children?
