my maximally cynical take is whats being selected for is selection effect the harder and less educating the class, the more you filter out 'undesirables' into humanities, the greater your department's prestige making average students marginally more educated is actively bad

If the demographic weren’t 18-22yo being granted a temporarily elevated social status with little immediate downside, I think people would be appalled with most UG course syllabi. The material is so obviously secondary to the class status you receive.
