Something I've been thinking about recently: most progressives would probably say that guns are at least as bad for society as social media, but while they talk about Mark Zuckerberg all the time it has never even occurred to them that they don't even know who runs Smith & Wesson
In general, it's absurdly easy to manipulate people's political/ethical attention in ways that they don't even notice upon intense reflection, especially when they're angry or trying to win/avoid losing. This is a super bad thing
The point here isn't whether or not people should hate Gun Manufacturer Guy as much as Facebook Guy, the point is that they can tweet about both political issues approximately ten thousand times without noticing that the question has never occurred to them
FWIW, I'm pretty sure I've got my own massive blind spots and malware with root access; I'm thinking about this stuff because I'm hoping there's some way to systemically clean house from inside the system
