Fiscal masochism is a failure mode in the other direction, where you find yourself sweating over a boiling vat of borax & cheese-grated dollar store soap to stick it to Big Detergent. Unfortunately, neither crazy shopping nor religious thrift make a serviceable human personality

Really, the faster you can navigate yourself to a place where most of your moves are utterly orthogonal to anything on the spectrum of social/performative consumption (or self-denial), the better. Family, friends, and even certain careers can push you toward or away from that
