I've come to realize that a lot of people are using "monopoly" to mean "very large company, lacking equally large competition." It doesn't really matter whether there's a healthy ecosystem of smaller competitors, or whether their advantage is based on product quality.

In the case of Amazon they competed against an extremely mature ecosystem of larger competitors! Sears, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc. They executed better.

Amazon is an especially interesting one, because most people *know* that they're executing better: they love same-day/next-day/2-day shipping, good experiences with missing packages or returns, and really don't want to deal with most other online sellers for everyday purchases
