In the case of Amazon they competed against an extremely mature ecosystem of larger competitors! Sears, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc. They executed better.

Amazon is an especially interesting one, because most people *know* that they're executing better: they love same-day/next-day/2-day shipping, good experiences with missing packages or returns, and really don't want to deal with most other online sellers for everyday purchases

People want a fundamentally simple situation to be the cause of all their problems. It’s easy to have the solution then. But recognizing a problem is not the same as knowing the solution. A lot of concept creep comes from not knowing there’s a difference.
