The main reason for our strict rules in Australia is to avoid a repeat of the Cane Toad, rabbit, fox, and Northern Pacific Seastar situations. The rules are for the best, despite my wishes for cool pets.
Dry conditions + high heat will kill these guys fast, so they're probably not a threat to your native species in most cases. But there is a global problem with smuggling wild-caught endangered species, and they can be hard to identify on sight

True. I'm in Tasmania, which has temperate rainforest but it's probably too cold for these ones. Weirdly enough we do allow cats- a huge threat to native birds and mammals. It's a cultural thing, like banning weed while allowing alcohol.
