To be fair there may be a multiple audiences thing at play here that the NYT is getting institutionally caught in the middle of, since “Lives on Park Avenue and sits on foundation boards” is traditionally *very* a major demographic for them.

There was a time in living memory where the NYT newsroom didn’t hate the idea of this person existing. Plausibly there are newsroom participants who still don’t, but they’re smart enough to stay silent when asked “So is take that she’s out of touch, racist, evil, or trifecta?”

The marginal tax rate on s/t cap gains=37% (vs L/t=20%), cynical take would be she had big s/t cap gains and offsets via donations + kickbacks. Carryforward period for deduction is 5 years and it reduces your taxable income by the donated cash amount.
