The problem is that it's both. If you're familiar with the video from Evergreen in which I say "I am not interested in debate, I'm only interested in dialectic..." it is this exact issue that lead me that conclusion. I learned a lot from high school debate, not all of it good.
These seem like terrible waters to muddy, unless your goal is to create confused human superweapons

It seems this makes some degree of sense to you that it doesn't make to me, woefully uneducated thing that I am, and I guess all I can do is thank my lucky stars that I lack the class to ever have been assumed worthy of it. I cut my teeth on better idealogues than this, for sure.

I agree completely. The professor is playing with fire given the current environment. And I had a hard time shaking the sense that he might believe some of what he was saying, but the actual degree could be anywhere from 0 - 100%.

As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter. What percentage of people who produce these arguments for any *real-world* end "really" believe them? An exercise in their utility is instructive enough
