Insofar as debate class is meant to create cognitive flexibility re: argumentation & augment empathy, I get it. I feel that I could fairly argue the inverse of most positions I've laid out. But if it's about capitalizing on the social popularity of weak arguments, it's a scourge.

yeah, it's getting so so disturbing. The pendulum has swung so far, and I'm afraid the only shock that will disrupt the swing will be a hard one to bear for all of us riding it.

SPACE PRIVILEGE hahahaha love it. NASA is an oppressive tool of White Supremacy designed to trick black people into believing space is real. Prove me wrong.

How can safe spaces exist, if space isn't real?

This is from a debate on a topic and the speaker is a talented debater student. The state of debate is fucked up, but this isn't pedagogy.

I listened to the entire thing — I can't speak to the state of debate as an organized activity. The speaker is not talented with regard to argumentation.

debate as a sport is built on bad faith and sophistry, the professor isn't saying anything he necessarily believes in, just winning the rhetoric game. the kid sucks, not that that's a bad thing. if he doesn't like being demoralized he should drop the class

Proceed with extreme caution. "Debate" as a formal school activity is a very strange phenomenon. The fact of a position being sophistry is immaterial. And there are strong hints in the full recording that the positions being advanced by the prof are put forward as an exercise.

It’s scary how easy it is to see red from obscure framing. Thanks for calling attention to that.
