“...the ideal of this country is the idea that our civilization is open to anyone who wants to adhere to the ideas of it; it has nothing to do with bloodline, it has everything to do with fealty to a certain set of beliefs." — @bariweiss on Making Sense with @SamHarrisOrghttps://twitter.com/SamHarrisOrg/status/1188880141969084416 …

Bari: “This whole notion of blood-and-soil nationalism that you increasingly see on the right... that civilization is somehow something that is passed down in the blood, and not something that is passed down through culture & ideas & beliefs is, to me, deeply anti-American."

Sam: “If I’m going to criticize neo-nazis, I’m not criticizing white people, I’m criticizing terrible ideas. And when I’m criticizing Islamism or Jihadism, I’m not criticizing Arabs or any other ethnicity, I’m criticizing the consequences of ideas.”

Earnest question Visa: how do you parse liking someone with disliking many of the people who also like them? Eg: in college I helped my roommate research how neonazis loved LOTR and even American History X. I still love LOTR but I questioned AHX, and how it could inspire hate...

I try to be clear about my reasons for liking what I like. Eg I'm actually a pretty big Rick and Morty fan – and one of the core tenets to me of the show is recognizing that Rick is horribly abusive, manipulative, dysfunctional from S1E1 – ie not someone to be idolized

LotR has beautiful themes of kinship, of courage and sacrifice. it is pretty unfortunate that all the good guys are white and all the bad guys are not, but I think it can be conveyed that that's not why we like it

I like that answer. I’d generally like to think we shouldn’t pick out the lowest common denominator, find everything they love, and then actively dislike that stuff. That seems like a poor way to enjoy culture.

But, it’s also interesting - at least in the twitter verse - to notice who has gnarly people in their mentions.

For what it's worth, I think my twitter account/tweets attract many center-left and center-right folks, and more far-right than far-left, but certainly some of each. I hope I'm validating good arguments & ideas & in some small way pulling on the Overton window for various bubbles

It’s actually worth quite a bit! I think people like you and Visa have great power in validating good arguments. In a weird way saying, “Hey it’s okay if you think this.” My response to friends when they complain about someone is simply saying, “I like them and I’m not too
