A while back, I made it my business to figure out whether birth was preferable in a hospital (with aenesthesiologists) vs. in a birth center without pain relief. I found it difficult to draw hard conclusions, but even that makes me think the medical system needs to do better

By the way, in terms of self-report, birth centers seem clearly preferable. The question I was left with was whether women who were more open to a birth without pain relief could tolerate it better than women who weren't, and that's really difficult to resolve

The reality for a hospital birth is that the experience is likely considerably less personal, less communicative & more restrictive, with strangers probing you at your most vulnerable; in a birth center, you'll have more emotional support & freedom, but the pain is what it is
