      A while back, I made it my business to figure out whether birth was preferable in a hospital (with aenesthesiologists) vs. in a birth center without pain relief. I found it difficult to draw hard conclusions, but even that makes me think the medical system needs to do better

      Definitive answer: Deliver your kids at a 1st rate hospital. The pain is agony. You need the anesthesia not only for comfort, but to avoid going into shock. And being in the hospital w/ real experts, and your family/friends is fine.
