A while back, I made it my business to figure out whether birth was preferable in a hospital (with aenesthesiologists) vs. in a birth center without pain relief. I found it difficult to draw hard conclusions, but even that makes me think the medical system needs to do better

Do you have stats on the safety of each?

As far as I could tell at the time I was researching this, both are pretty safe. Birth centers may actually appear to have fewer adverse results, but they only accept clients with confirmed uncomplicated pregnancies & initiate hospital transfers when there are warning signs

Many hospitals now have L&D wards that are a lot like birth centers and are much more mom & baby friendly than they used to be. It really varies by the facility. It also helps to have an informed advocate or partner with the mom in either case.

Hi. Man here, three kids. Two home births. I love midwives and wish they were better paid etc. The 'risk' mentality of hospitals is a bit overbearing. Birth is a natural event (sometime forgotten) and needs the right environment, which is why birthing clinics are great.

My wife did 3 hospital births, 1st w/ epidural and 2nd/3rd without. Had some amazing and helpful nurses and some not so amazing nurses. Quickly learned to ask/insist for things she needed. Best nurse was former midwife. Would be open to birth center if had emergency services.

Depends on the hospital.

Most of them don't have anesthesiologists on staff

I really liked having a hospital birth *because* it was so personal; the doctors & nurses were so kind and seemed genuinely happy for me. Someone helped me to the toilet when I couldn’t on my own! It’s emotionally *huge* to experience being that helpless and then getting help.

Honestly I’m kind of a medicine fangirl. If I had an excuse *besides* being a patient to hang out with nurses all day I’d be all over that.
