By the way, in terms of self-report, birth centers seem clearly preferable. The question I was left with was whether women who were more open to a birth without pain relief could tolerate it better than women who weren't, and that's really difficult to resolve

The reality for a hospital birth is that the experience is likely considerably less personal, less communicative & more restrictive, with strangers probing you at your most vulnerable; in a birth center, you'll have more emotional support & freedom, but the pain is what it is

What would be the benefit in favor of a birth center without pain meds?

A comfortable space where you're allowed to move around, take a bath, etc., and only encounter people you're familiar with

Have you read Atul Gawande's Better? Some excellent stuff in there about obstetrics.

Both my children were born in our home via midwife. 1st one - I practically delivered myself. Labour started quick. We put the call in too late and a sudden snow storm complicated the arrival of midwives That aside I Would absolutely recommend home births.

Have you looked into birth centers that use nitrous oxide for pain relief? Very common in many other countries, has been less common in US but growing in availability:https://parenting.nytimes.com/pregnancy/nitrous-oxide-laughing-gas-labor …

Definitive answer: Deliver your kids at a 1st rate hospital. The pain is agony. You need the anesthesia not only for comfort, but to avoid going into shock. And being in the hospital w/ real experts, and your family/friends is fine.

Too simplistic, but not a terrible take within the confines of 280 characters.
