It seems like there's no longer *any* pressure on public servants to defend the arguments they're making, or to even make them *appear defensible,* so long as the target is right, the speech is charismatic & the phrases pattern-match to the verbal attire of the political tribe
What scares me isn't just that it's a farce, what scares me is that I actually think a large number of people listen to this **and genuinely believe they've heard a coherent and well-supported argument.** It doesn't stand up to a moment of reflection, **and it doesn't need to!**

There are so many people saying "Zuckerberg was completely unprepared for this hearing!", ignoring the fact that very few of the questions were actually relevant.
Libra has serious concerns in regards to privacy, centralization, etc. Politicians ignored all that and instead asked questions like "How many black women are working on Libra?" And people, completely unaware of what Libra even is, just nod and agree.
I share your concern. (Somewhat ironically) the issue is relatively new. In the past people would hear this message interpreted by a news medium that had a semblance of objectivity. Today laymen are hearing it directly from the horses mouth through digital and social media.
What scares me is that the arguments are so bad I'm finding myself defending Zuckerburg more and more. The first generation of Silicon Valley overlords have some wherewithal. The second gen like Tim Cook are naked authoritarians, and these Congresspeople don't touch them.
Indeed. Many implicitly have “state good, big business evil” idling in background, unchallenged. They see @AOC up against Zuckerberg & it’s as clear to them as Iron Man vs Thanos who the white & black hats are. Little needs to be said. After all: why’s he on trial unless suspect?
People want to see Facebook burn...regardless of how it happens, they are grabbing the popcorn.
