Or maybe it's just that people are still very averse to opening a haggle at a compromise position (like the 44th president did), only to end up with a system that is significantly right-of-center.

Fair point, and I do feel like DSA is at best using sloppy language in the page you quoted, but, for the 4th time in this thread: personal encounters don't really tell you anything about the actual popularity of the position to "eradicate" "capitalism".https://twitter.com/JamesWidman/status/1186663223350591488 …

Again, please see my 1st post. With a set of carefully-worded questions about policy prefs (avoiding subjective terms like "capitalism"), a survey could give us a much clearer picture about the kinds of systems that are actually popular among people who are more likely to vote D.

I am saying that the data thus far made available (at least, that i am aware of) does not at this time support the supposition that "communism" has reached a level of popularity that anyone needs to act like it is a real or clearly-defined threat.

However, you have raised an interesting question, and I look forward to any well-designed surveys whose results might provide useful answers to that question.

But since you mentioned history: I hope we'll also recall the history of the red scare in the u.s.: the fear of people associating with communist parties in the u.s. turned out to be more damaging than the communist parties themselves. We don't need another round of McCarthyism.

Oh ffs. I said "if you don't like communism...," you replied that nobody disagrees with that, & now we're somehow on McCarthyism. I think communism is a bad idea. I think some people disagree, because they've explicitly said so. By no means would I want to persecute them for it.

I'm alarmed by what sure looks to me like the increasing memetic success of communism in American culture. I'm alarmed by the emergence of a popular DSA presidential candidate. I would be *more alarmed* by any push for political suppression as a response

          > "I would be *more alarmed* by any push for political suppression as a response" Glad to hear it! I only wanted to note that the fear of communism does have a history of spiraling out of control. I feel like a lot of the fear comes from missing data.
