  I suspect most people answering (1) are thinking of beliefs that might be held by the opposing political party in their country, not, say, Stalinists or slaveowners. Or they don't think that understanding is the same as being capable of generating the same thoughts.

  Yes. And all the different beliefs, even the repulsive or extreme serve a useful purpose. The messages are often misguided though. Sometimes we need to ignore the specific statements and analyze what causes one to believe as such. Directly or indirectly, you can learn from it.
